The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
