British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
